Pôsobil tu v r. 1894 – 1907, keď sa v dôsledku spoločensko-klanových sporov i so svojou mladou manželkou Pericou Didolićovou, vysťahoval do Južnej Ameriky. Po vzniku Československej republiky pomýšľa na návrat do vlasti. V Martine, kde sa usídlil, začína písať a študovať archívne materiály k historickej rapsódii o kultúrnych a politických aktivitách mladej romantickej generácie. V r. 1923 – 1925 striedavo žije v chorvátskych mestách a v Martine. V novembri 1925 sa vracia do Chile, aby usporiadal majetkové záležitosti. Po návrate na jar 1926 sa s manželkou, trpiacou duševnou chorobou, usádza v chorvátskom kúpeľnom mestečku Lipik. Tu v apríli 1928 ochorel na zápal pľúc, na ktorý 21. mája umrel. Dočasne bol pochovaný v rodinnej hrobke Didolićovcov, odkiaľ jeho telesné pozostatky previezli na Národný cintorín v Martine.
