"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," writes Charles Dickens in the opening of this dark and meaningful classic novel. It is the year 1775 and Jarvis Lorry is tasked with a secret mission for his employer. 17-year-old Lucie Manette joins him on his travels from London to Paris and is shocked to learn that her father is alive and has been released from eighteen years in a Paris prison. Set in the two metropolises just prior (and during) the French Revolution, Dickens paints a distinct picture of the social and political events of the time. `A Tale of Two Cities‘ is masterfully written, includes Dickens' perhaps greatest villain, and ties up everything in an especially satisfying ending.

Returning to London from war, an injured Dr John Watson is in acute need of a place to live. An acquaintance introduces him to the eccentric "consultant detective" Sherlock Holmes, and Watson soon finds himself pulled into an alluring world of crime solving adventures. Told partly through Watson, partly through the murderer, `A Study in Scarlet‘ (1887) is Arthur Conan Doyle‘s first dip into the world of Sherlock Holmes, and one that would make him world famous. This first Holmes novel became the basis of the pilot episode of the extremely popular BBC show, Sherlock (2010-2017), by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

A stranger and foreigner arrives at the offices of a small publication in London only to be faced by the "editor" whose face is completely swathed in a veil. Nothing is as it seems, and it quickly becomes evident that both are bent on more than lively gossip about the elite. Blackmail and opportunism is the order of the day. When two men are found shot to death outside the door of Mr. Farrington the millionaire who just happens to live a few doors from T. B. Smith, the head of the secret police, the connections to blackmail are not long in coming. Were these men shot by the blackmailer? Who is actually what he seems to be?

Five thousand dollars is offered in reward to whomever finds the six-year-old heiress, Gwendolen Ocumpaugh, who has disappeared mysteriously from her home. Mr. Trevitt, a private detective, is on the case and when he discovers two lost shoes in the surrounding are – both for the same foot! – he suspects a conspiracy is at play. `The Millionaire Baby‘ (1905) is a story by American crime writer Anna Katharine Green; a delightful mystery with fascinating characters and twist after twist after twist.

A Princess of Mars (1912) is a science fantasy novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first of his Barsoom series. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the novel is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction. It is also a seminal instance of the planetary romance, a sub genre of science fantasy that became highly popular in the decades following its publication. Its early chapters also contain elements of the Western. The story is set on Mars, imagined as a dying planet with a harsh desert environment. John Carter is a 2012 American science fiction adventure film directed by Andrew Stanton and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on A Princess of Mars.

A millionaire is taken suddenly ill, and sensing his mortality, he asks his attorney to do him one last favor - to find and secretly watch over his missing niece, the daughter of his profligate deceased sister. This niece at the appropriate time would become heir to his millions. However, the millionaire is mysteriously murdered, stabbed to death in his sick bed. Oliva Cresswell, the unsuspecting niece, has been a cashier in a large West End store for five years when she meets a Mr. Beale, a self described wheat merchant, is attacked in her flat and rescued by this Mr. Beale, is offered a job as his confidential secretary, refuses him, is unexplainably sacked and finds herself in need of his offer. The mysteries multiply and deepen as the story proceeds.

Sara Crewe is devastated when the news of her beloved father‘s death in India reaches her at her boarding school in London. Miss Minchin, the heartless and greedy headmistress, immediately moves Sara to the attic and forces her to become her servant. Despite being used to luxury, Sara quickly adjusts to her new life and never stops being kind and polite to everyone. Little does she now that someone out there is looking for her, and they might be much closer than they think.Author Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett – most famous for her novel The Secret Garden (1911) – originally wrote A Little Princess as a short story, and later a play, finally turning it into a novel on her publisher‘s recommendation in 1905. As smart and imaginative as Anne Shirley of Anne of Green Gables, Sara has been winning over readers for over a hundred years, and A Little Princess is considered one of the best children‘s stories of all time.

Oscar Wilde supposedly said that these fables were "intended neither for the British child nor the British public". A follow-up to his first popular fairy-tale collection (`The Happy Prince and Other Tales‘), `A House of Pomegranates‘ (1891) is indeed decidedly darker and more adult. The collection includes "The Young King", "The Birthday of the Infanta, "The Fisherman of his Soul", and "The Star Child". While similar, in some ways, to the fairy-tales of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm these have a certain interesting Wilde flair to them that is hard to pinpoint.

Three young girls wander into an enchanted forest at meet a fairy woman, who is bored with her perfect, immortal life. She convinces them to turn her into a human and decides to become a prince because boys have more fun. His/her new existence exploring the surrounding kingdoms is fast and adventurous from the get-go. What unfolds in an interesting story of problems solved by a woman‘s mind in the luxury of a man‘s body. `The Enchanted Island of Yew` (1903) was written by L. Frank Baum, the author of `The Wonderful Wizard of Oz‘, but is separate from the Oz series. This story clearly comes from the same imagination, however, with the added bonus of some interesting gender-bender elements.

A princess is locked away on a remote island guarded by a dragon. Many suitors try and fail to save her, but one day a clever boy arrives. So begins `The Island of Nine Whirlpools`, one of Edith Nesbitt‘s eight dragon stories in `The Book of Dragons‘ (1899). The tales may be over a hundred years old, but they contain a timeless quality that ignites the imagination and creates a sense of wonder. Child or adult, these stories are written with such warmth and wit, anyone will find themselves laughing out loud with regular intervals. They may revoke a certain Tolkien feeling, and C.S. Lewis, who read Nesbitt‘s books as a child, was clearly inspired by her works.

A collection of four short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the common theme of which is New Hampshire's White Mountains. Consists of: The Great Stone Face, written in 1850 and revolves around the 'Old Man of the Mountain (Cannon Mtn.) in New Hampshire which sadly collapsed on May 3, 2003; The Ambitious Guest, written in 1835; The Great Carbuncle, written in 1837; and Sketches From Memory, written sometime prior to The Great Carbuncle as will become obvious.

One night at Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean and greedy man, gets a visit from the ghost of his dead business partner. The ghost warns him about the awful punishment that awaits if he continues to live his life selfishly. The next three nights, Scrooge is visited by three separate spirits who confront him with Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. Will the horrors and the joy Scrooge sees make him change his ways? Adapted for film and television more times than any other Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol (1843) is one of the most famous Christmas stories ever told. In the popular 2009 animated film, Jim Carrey voices the grouchy main character alongside Gary Oldman and Colin Firth. Warm, empathetic, and socially aware, this classic novella is bound to put any listener in the proper Christmas mood.

Anna, a German mill-owner‘s daughter, marries a French aristocrat and moves to France. She discovers that her husband killed his previous wife and that he is trying to kill her as well. Quick, intriguing, and with an extremely interesting plot, `The Grey Woman‘ (1861) is a short story by Elizabeth Gaskell for anyone who enjoys a good gothic shudder. Incredibly progressive for its time, it is about the survival of the ill-treated woman who has decided that enough is enough.

24 short stories in fairly typical Bierce fashionghostly, spooky, to be read (or listened to) in the dark, perhaps with a light crackling fire burning dimly in the background. Stories of ghosts, apparitions, and strange, inexplicable occurrences are prevalent in these tales, some of which occur on or near Civil War fields of battle, some in country cottages, and some within urban areas. Can Such Things Be? implies and relates that anything is possible, at any time.
